Novotel has always been an innovator in the hotel world. Since its creation 40 years ago, the chain has evolved, anticipating the expectations of its customers, innovating in well-being, comfort and sustainable development.
An integral part of its DNA, the brand is pursuing its long-range commitment within the framework of the Accor Group's Earth Guest program, focused on three areas of endeavor: establishing construction standards, ensuring that staff and employees practice sustainable development on a daily basis, and getting hotels guests to feel concerned and involved.
To affirm its community commitment, Novotel signed a partnership agreement in July 2007 with Green Globe, the international environmental certification program for responsible travel and tourism.
It is to this end that the Novotel Hotels in Montreal and Ottawa partnered with Brome-Missisquoi MRC. In 2009, the hotels launched a project aimed at fighting blue-green algae by planting vegetation along the banks of the Yamaska River.
It is by committing to planting one tree for every reservation made on the Internet sites of these two hotels, at www.novotelottawa.com , www.novotelmontreal.com or novotel.accorhotels.com that we are proud to announce that over 250,000 trees have been planted resulting in an improved environment including better quality of the drinking water for the residents of Brome-Missisquoi MRC. Novotel Montreal Centre and Novotel Ottawa are proud to contribute in this way to the protection of the environment for future generations.
Everybody wins with our environmental offer and thousands of new seedlings and trees will be planted where they are needed most.
The MRC already has a regional nursery for ornamental vegetation, but a new nursery has been created alongside it to produce shrubs adapted to shorelines. Shrubs are sought after by shoreline residents because their roots stabilize the banks, they feed on phosphorous, they are esthetically pleasing and do not block the view of the water. By supplying mature shrubs they can get a good survival rate, minimizing the need for maintenance and having an immediate effect on the area.
Many kilometres of shoreline will be restored year after year, which will make a real difference in water quality.
The planting and the distribution will be overseen by the watershed organisation of Yamaska River and watershed organisation of Missisquoi Bay.
